Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. When she was a little girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessive compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety due to the word"association. Ford became interested in the acting profession during her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she concluded that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place suitable for her. Ford applied instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered an interview on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford didn't graduate in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her debut on television in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such television shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention for her stand up comedy in 1996.
